Teen charged with attempted murder as Smethwick attack treated as hate crime

A teenager has been charged with attempted murder and a second boy has been arrested after a man was left critically injured in Smethwick.
Emergency services were called out to St Pauls Road just before 8.30pm on 14 June following reports of an assault.
A man in his 50s was taken to hospital with potentially life-threatening injures. He remains there in a critical but stable condition.
The incident is being treated as a hate crime due to a homophobic comment made during the attack.
A 17-year-old boy charged with attempted murder appeared before magistrates in Birmingham today (19 June).
He's been remanded into youth detention ahead of his next appearance at Birmingham Crown Court on 17 July.
A second 17-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder just before 4am today in the Dudley area.
