Shropshire Grief Cafés seek community support as fundraising deadline is extended
Initiative aims to expand grief support services across the county
Shropshire Grief Tending Services CIC has renewed its plea for support to expand its grief cafés across the county, extending its fundraising deadline to 29th March 2026.
Through Crowdfund Shropshire, the CIC aims to raise funds to continue its valuable work, providing more communities with grief support.
Grief cafés currently operate at Wem Town Hall, Ludlow Library, and Shrewsbury Library, with additional support over the border in Leegomery.
The Holding Grief, Growing Hope project seeks to create more communal spaces, offer one-to-one support, and train grief volunteers.
These cafés provide an inclusive environment where sorrow is honoured, and trauma-informed support is available for those experiencing grief due to death, loss, or crisis.
Match Funding and Support
Community donations will be matched by Shropshire Council using funds from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF), which supports the UK government's missions to empower communities and promote economic opportunities.
Crowdfund Shropshire, facilitated by Shropshire Council in partnership with Spacehive, collaborates with various local organizations including Shropshire VCS Assembly and Energize.
Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Communities, Alex Wagner, endorsed the project.
“This project is based on a model that works and has proven beneficial for the people of Wem, Ludlow, and Shrewsbury," Wagner said.
He encourages Shropshire residents to support the initiative with donations, emphasizing even small contributions can make a difference.
Cllr Gary Groves, from Wem, supports the civic crowdfunding approach.
“This collective approach makes a little bit go further and it makes things happen," Groves commented.
He urged local businesses to consider assisting with donations, highlighting the importance of community support.
The fundraiser offers an opportunity for the community to contribute to the project and support those facing grief and crisis.
