Plans have been submitted for a new car park to be built at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

If approved, it will be adjacent to the Copthorne Building, and will support the ongoing operational needs and development of the hospital.

A total of 56 parking bays are proposed, as well as two designated for EV charging, and three that are accessible.

There will also be a new pedestrian footpath to ensure safe movement within the car park.

“The car park layout has been designed to maximise parking capacity while ensuring adequate circulation space and compliance with accessibility requirements,” said Tracy Awanyo, of Nexus Planning.

“The provision of EV charging infrastructure demonstrates the project’s

commitment to sustainable transport options.

“The site will be accessed via the existing hospital road network from Mytton Oak Road. The car park will be integrated with the hospital’s existing circulation routes and will be clearly signposted to assist in locating available parking spaces.

“Access arrangements have been designed to minimise any impact on the existing hospital operations and traffic flow.”

A biodiversity net gain (BNG) assessment has been submitted along with the full planning application. It states that, while some exisiting areas of low-quality modified grassland and a limited number of trees will be removed to facilitate the development, they will be replaced and enhanced.

This will be done via a comprehensive landscaping scheme,

including the introduction of species-rich grassland, native hedgerow planting, ornamental shrub planting and new tree planting.

“Overall, the proposed development will result in a clear uplift in ecological value, with the landscaping strategy designed not only to mitigate the impacts of development but to deliver long-term biodiversity benefits in accordance

with national policy,” said Ms Awanyo.

“The overall site layout respects the existing hospital buildings and infrastructure, with the car park positioned to minimise any adverse impact on neighbouring facilities. The development will include appropriate lighting to ensure safety and security for users during darker hours.

“The development provides essential infrastructure to support Royal Shrewsbury Hospital’s operational needs and improves accessibility to

healthcare services for the local community.

“The proposals do not give rise to any significant issues in terms of design, access, amenity, or environmental impact.

“The car park has been designed to integrate with the existing hospital campus, with appropriate provision for landscaping, lighting, drainage, and sustainable transport infrastructure.”

The consultation period expires on May 26.
