The funding will help enhance cultural and heritage infrastructure across the borough, encouraging greater participation in arts and community activities for residents of all ages.

The investment will be used to upgrade a wide range of cultural spaces, including museums, libraries, archives, and high streets, while also supporting grassroots and community organisations through grants.

These improvements aim to strengthen Sandwell’s vibrant creative sector and make arts and heritage activities more accessible to everyone.

Speaking to Council Leader, Kerrie Carmichael, she told us:

"Well cultural history is within us, isn't it, you know, and I speak to so many people in Sandwell in my area who are really interested in what was what in the borough at one time, you know, so if we've got that extra funding coming through, then obviously we can can learn more and do more around those things that people are interested in."

Among the projects set to benefit are Thimblemill Library, which will see its performance spaces enhanced, and Oak House Museum, where playground improvements will improve the visitor experience for families and young people.

Councillor Suzanne Hartwell, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods and Community, said:

“Sandwell has a rich and varied cultural scene that continues to grow and change."

"Taking part in arts, heritage and community activities can make a real difference to people’s lives, helping them feel happier, learn new skills and connect with others.

"This funding will help more residents, of all ages and backgrounds, enjoy and get involved in culture across the borough, in ways that truly reflect and celebrate our diverse community.”

Further details about individual projects and how the funding will be allocated will be shared over the next two years as the programme progresses.
