£30m improvement plan announced for roads around Shropshire Triangle
Essential works to enhance safety and journey standards begin this October
National Highways has unveiled a £30 million investment plan aimed at enhancing safety and journey quality for travellers along the 'Shropshire Triangle.'
The area comprises three major A roads—A5, A483, and A458—providing vital links for communities, businesses, and visitors between the Midlands, North Wales, and the North West.
As vehicle usage grows and infrastructure ages, crucial maintenance and upgrades are necessary to ensure safety and efficiency.
The extensive works programme includes resurfacing, drainage repairs, renewal of safety barriers, and various road maintenance strategies.
Key elements of the upgrade comprise the repainting of 144,531 metres of road markings, replacement of 8,688 road studs, and renewal of 160m of concrete barriers.
Joseph Walmsley, National Highways’ Route Manager for Shropshire, highlighted the importance of upgrading 60-year-old roads, stating, "We know that these are key routes so it is good news for Shropshire that we can now get on with these essential works and ultimately improve journeys for local communities, businesses and all who use these roads."
Work on the A458 from Shrewsbury to the Welsh border commences next month, on 5th October, with completion anticipated by March.
These activities will primarily take place overnight to minimise traffic disruption.
Additional projects include significant resurfacing and drainage work on the A5 from Chirk to Preston, scheduled to start in January 2027 and run into spring 2028.
