Dads invited to baby massage sessions at Shropshire fire station to tackle support gap

New sessions aim to help fathers build confidence, bond with their babies, and address the “grey area” in support for dads.

Infant massage instructor Fiona Rolfe is launching the sessions at Loggerheads Fire Station, hoping the relaxed and unexpected setting will help break down barriers that often stop fathers from getting involved.

Fiona, who has more than 15 years’ experience, says many dads struggle to bond with their newborns and can feel unsure of their role in the early stages of parenting.

“You’ve got this newborn baby – they don’t come with a handbook,” she said. “You can only be so prepared, and then the baby arrives and it’s not always what you expected. Some dads don’t know how to interact or play with their baby in those early weeks.”

She believes traditional perceptions around parenting can also play a role.

“There’s still a stereotype that it’s always the mum who does these kinds of activities. Some dads might feel it’s ‘not for them’ or even worry it’s seen as a bit soft – but that’s exactly what we’re trying to change.”

The sessions are specifically designed to be more accessible for fathers, with weekend timings and a non-traditional venue aimed at making men feel more comfortable attending.

“It doesn’t have to be a studio or a church hall,” Fiona added. “It could be a fire station, a pub – somewhere that feels more natural and welcoming. It’s about creating spaces where dads actually want to come.”

The classes run over five weeks and teach simple massage techniques to help strengthen the bond between parent and child, while also supporting babies’ development and helping fathers better understand their baby’s cues.

But Fiona says the benefits go far beyond physical touch.

“It’s about confidence, connection, and giving dads a chance to meet other fathers. Some men feel quite isolated, especially if they’ve moved to the area or don’t know other parents. These sessions can help build friendships and open up conversations.”

The initiative comes amid growing awareness that support for new fathers can be inconsistent, with many describing it as a “grey area” compared to the more established services available for mothers.

Fiona hopes the sessions will help challenge that imbalance and encourage more inclusive support for families.

“Dads deserve the same opportunity to bond with their babies and feel confident in their role,” she said. “If we can help even a few feel more connected and less alone, that’s a huge step forward.”

The first session will take place at Loggerheads Community Fire Station on April 18.
