Council explores solutions as locals endure frequent flooding
Newport faced another wave of heavy rainfall yesterday (27 August), leading to flooding issues across several areas, including Boughey Road, Wellington Road, and the Springfields estate.
Councillor Thomas Janke highlighted the frequency of these events, driven by longstanding drainage capacity problems. These issues have become more pronounced due to increasingly intense rainfall, further exposing the limitations of the current drainage network.
Earlier this summer, Janke took these concerns to Telford & Wrekin Council’s Drainage Team. Engineers are now surveying the local highway drainage system to assess connectivity and identify restrictions or capacity issues.
In parallel, discussions with Severn Trent are focused on network capabilities and potential relief measures.
Additionally, solutions are being developed for the Church Aston playing field off Springfields estate to improve water attenuation, with public consultations anticipated once proposals are finalised.
These recent floods underscore the urgency of addressing drainage shortcomings. Janke committed to incorporating last night's events into ongoing investigations and continues to advocate for effective resolutions.
