New self-storage facility and coffee drive-thru proposed for former Wolverhampton bowling alley site
Plans aim to revitalise vacant Shaw Road location
Plans have been unveiled to convert the site of the former Strykers bowling alley in Bushbury, Wolverhampton into a self-storage facility and coffee drive-thru.
The proposal from Strykers Development Ltd seeks permission from City of Wolverhampton Council for a 17,000 square foot Storage Giant self-storage facility and a Starbucks drive-thru on Shaw Road.
The bowling alley, popular with local residents, was destroyed by a fire in December 2013 and has remained vacant since.
Previous Site Challenges
Originally closed in October 2013, the site faced immediate vandalism from metal thieves, causing extensive damage with stolen water tanks and copper pipes.
In 2023, Lidl planned to develop a supermarket on the land but those plans were withdrawn.
More than 100 firefighters battled the blaze that gutted the bowling alley just two months after it ceased operations.
Revitalising Bushbury
The new plans aim to renew the area with employment opportunities and continuous use, aligning with local development objectives.
A statement accompanying the application highlights the site's current state as vacant and overgrown. It emphasises the proposal's potential to enhance the area's prime location along Bushbury Lane.
The design promises flexibility and longevity for the location, encompassing a multipurpose self-storage facility and drive-thru coffee service.
The envisioned site redevelopment aims to inject vibrancy into Bushbury with varied offerings and consistent usage.
