A man has been jailed for 29 years after a woman was brutally attacked and murdered in Smethwick last year.
On the 11th of August, 41-year-old Shara Millar’s body was found by a member of the public just after 6am on Woodburn Road. She had suffered head injuries, and it was clear nothing could be done to save her.
A forensic post-mortem examination showed that the cause of her death was strangulation.
Police then launched a murder investigation and carried out CCTV enquiries.
Footage showed that just before 1am, a white sprinter van pulled into Woodburn Road. About half an hour later, Shara’s body was removed from the back of the van and left on the pavement. A liquid was also splashed and shaken over her body.
Earlier that night, the same van was seen on Soho Road, Handsworth and Shara was seen getting into it on Victoria Road.
Further enquiries by police found that the van was registered to a rental company and was being used as a business vehicle for parcel delivery. Officers found that it was in the possession of Tanveer Singh at the time of the offence.
Officers visited Singh's home address and stopped him in a vehicle near to his house. He was arrested on suspicion of murder and subsequently charged.
Following a two-week trial, 32-year-old Singh of Leopard Lane, West Bromwich was convicted of murder.
Today at Wolverhampton Crown Court, he was sentenced to 29 years in prison. The judge described Singh as a ‘manipulative and cynical’ man.
DI Joe Davenport, Homicide Unit, said: “Shara was brutally killed by a dangerous predator."
“Singh was drinking in a pub earlier in the night and visited Soho Road to look for sex workers. He then picked Shara up in his van and she was fatally attacked."
“He attempted to get rid of any trace of his presence by pouring a liquid over Shara’s body to destroy any forensic evidence."
“My thoughts are with Shara’s loved ones, and I thank them for the support during this investigation and trial.”
