The Canal & River Trust has announced significant progress in the reconstruction of Llangollen Canal following a major embankment breach near Whitchurch last December. The canal is anticipated to reopen in March 2027, allowing for tourism and boating activities to resume at the start of the season.

Ground investigations, engineering surveys, and design work have culminated in the rebuild's advanced phase. The reconstruction uses modern techniques to enhance the embankment's strength and resilience, ensuring navigation and supporting fresh water supply to Cheshire homes and businesses.

Chief executive Campbell Robb highlighted the collaboration with Kier, the Trust's infrastructure partner, in implementing the solution critical to overcoming weather challenges and climate effects.

While work continues, the Trust remains confident about meeting the reopening date, providing assurance to businesses, boaters, and local communities reliant on this canal. The embankment's completion is slated before Christmas, with the next phase starting soon after.
