Council declares Shrewsbury house fire as major incident

Major response leads to road closure as crews work on-site on Castle Street

Fire crews from Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service are responding to a house fire on Castle Street, Shrewsbury, reported in the early hours of today (27th January 2026.)

The alarm was raised at 03:22, with seven fire appliances, including an Aerial Ladder Platform and the Incident Command Unit, mobilised from Baschurch, Shrewsbury, Telford Central, Tweedale, and Wellington. Operations and Safety officers attended the incident, alongside the Land Ambulance Service and the police.

Described as a large building fire, several crews are working to contain the fire.

Castle Street has been closed while the incident remains ongoing and residents and motorists are advised to avoid the area.

In a statement on its website, Shropshire Council said: "There is a cordon in place blocking off Castle Street from the library to St Mary's, so please avoid the area.

"The bus and train stations are operating as usual, and all three Park and Ride services are serving the town centre, with diversions in place for the Oxon and Harlescott routes."

In a statement, West Mercia Police said: "Emergency services are currently on scene and responding to a large fire on Castle Street in Shrewsbury.

"Officers were called to the scene around 3.30am this morning (Tuesday 27 January) and there is now a cordon in place with surrounding roads closed.

"We are asking the public to please avoid the area."
