Backed by £301 million from the government’s Pride in Place strategy, the initiative will support local areas in reimagining their town centres.

The funding will help transform high streets into vibrant spaces, encouraging more visitors through new homes, health services, libraries, community hubs and green areas. Local businesses and organisations will also be encouraged to get involved, with specific locations to be confirmed soon.

Alongside the high street revamp, an additional £18 million will roll out and restore playgrounds for children in some of the most deprived communities.

In the Black Country, this includes funding for new and improved play areas in Sandwell, Walsall, Dudley and Wolverhampton.

The aim is to give children safe, high-quality spaces to play, with a focus on areas with the greatest need.

The Pride in Place strategy also includes a fresh approach to local spending, with new partnerships encouraging councils, the NHS and schools to work together and pool resources. The Black Country will be part of a pioneering project to support teenagers struggling with their mental health, while Dudley is already building community power by training trusted local representatives to engage with residents directly.

Communities Secretary Steve Reed said the investment is about “giving communities the tools, the funding and the power they need to rebuild,” with people across the country set to “see and feel the difference this investment makes, restoring pride in local areas.”

Funding for playgrounds will go straight to local councils, who are also encouraged to consider buying British materials.

All of these plans aim to spark a wave of regeneration, empowering local people and creating vibrant, welcoming neighbourhoods for families and businesses alike.
