Fires on Cannock Chase prompt warnings about lighting barbecues
Staffordshire County Council cautions against open flames
Visitors to Cannock Chase are being cautioned against lighting fires and using barbecues after two significant fires occurred in the area over the past week.
The Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service recently dealt with a major blaze at Sherbrook Valley, which crews are still working on to prevent further spreading.
The fire department urged people to steer clear of the area while firefighters conduct damping operations, being supported by local council staff and other partners.
Last week, another fire engulfed a heathland area comparable to the size of a football pitch, leading to the closure of a section of Chase Road.
Investigations revealed a disposable barbecue as the cause of the fire, which resulted in considerable damage to the landscape and the loss of protected wildlife.
Amid the ongoing dry conditions and rising temperatures increasing wildfire risks, Staffordshire County Council is asking visitors to exercise caution to safeguard this cherished natural haven.
Hayley Coles, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Communities and Culture at Staffordshire County Council, emphasised the importance of vigilance:
“This is the second serious fire we have seen on Cannock Chase in the space of a week, which is why we are reminding people to be extra careful.
“We are asking everyone visiting the Chase to act responsibly, leave barbecues and open flames at home and follow the advice from our rangers."
Coles also mentioned the potential dangers these fires pose to the environment:
“Both of these incidents have caused significant damage to the landscape and local wildlife. These fires put people, wildlife and nearby properties at risk and can have long-lasting consequences for the area."
Visitors are urged to avoid fire-affected zones for safety reasons and to enable fire service personnel and rangers to manage the situation effectively.
Cannock Chase supports diverse rare wildlife and habitats that may require extensive recovery time following fire damage.
With dry weather, even a minor spark can lead to widespread fires.
Rangers recommend visitors adhere to preventive measures, which include not using disposable barbecues or open flames.
Proper disposal of cigarettes and smoking materials, removing litter or using designated bins, refraining from leaving glass bottles, and using camping stoves or gas burners only in permitted areas are also encouraged.
