VE day events across Berkshire and north Hampshire
Ceremonies, services and performances mark the 80th anniversary
The 80th Anniversary of VE day will be marked in a variety of ways across Berkshire and north Hampshire.
Here's our guide to what's happening:
Reading
A civic commemoration service is being held in Reading to mark the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day on Thursday 8 May, 7pm.
Members of the public are invited to join the Mayor of Reading, Cllr Glenn Dennis, at the service at the Reading Minster, St Mary’s Butts.
The special service will offer a time of reflection and remembrance to mark 80 years since the end of the Second World War in Europe and to honour those who sacrificed their lives.
The service will be followed by a reception with the Mayor where light refreshments will be served.
Newbury
At 11am, a service will be held at Newbury’s War Memorial to pay respects to the brave individuals who fought and sacrificed for freedom.
Fair Close Day Centre will be hosting a special VE Day Celebration lunch for over 65’s. Enjoy entertainment and fish and chips to celebrate the spirit of VE Day. Booking essential on 01635 40488 or email [email protected] .
From 7pm, bring a picnic and join us in Victoria Park for a Beacon Lighting ceremony. As the beacon is lit at 9:30pm, the community will reflect on the significance of VE Day, a symbol of hope, peace, and unity. Music and speeches will accompany the ceremony, with everyone invited to participate in this moment of national commemoration.
Basingstoke
Starting with a flag raising service at 10am at the Civic Offices, led by the Mayor of Basingstoke and Deane Cllr Dan Putty, the Top of the Town will host performances and activities to mark the historic day.
At 12 noon and 1pm, The Bluestockings, a group of female vocalists dressed in authentic 1940s Royal Air Force uniforms, will bring back to life the harmonies and choreographed style of singers like the Andrews Sisters. Their performances and vintage flair will provide the perfect soundtrack to a spring lunchtime in the Top of the Town.
Then, at 5pm and 7pm, Scratchbuilt Productions with present an interactive family show The Thornycroft Girls: The Women Who Helped Win the War. Based on the true stories of the women who worked at the Thornycroft factory in Basingstoke, where they built military vehicles during World War II, this 25-minute performance features a life-sized kit car that children can ride in.
From 8pm to 9pm, the Willis Museum will light up with projections that will transport audiences back 80 years to the VE Day street parties held in Basingstoke. These captivating projections will celebrate the spirit of victory and community, offering a unique glimpse into the town's history.
Andover
A Service to mark the 80th Anniversary of VE Day is being held on Thursday 8th May at 6pm, in St Mary’s Church, Andover.
The Mayor and Mayoress of Test Valley, Councillor Ian Jeffrey and Mrs Maura Jeffrey, will be in attendance.
