Travelodge CEO steps down after Berkshire hotel assault

Safety concerns lead to leadership change

The Chief Executive at Travelodge has resigned as the hotel chain continues to address safety concerns following an assault at its Maidenhead location.

The decision comes after Jo Boydell faced criticism over her handling of the situation. For the time being, Ray Reidy, the chief financial officer, will assume the role of CEO while the company seeks a permanent successor.

The Oxfordshire based company stated that Boydell's departure ends her 13-year tenure at Travelodge.

Concerns over safety arose when Kyran Smith was given a key card to a guest's room, facilitating a sexual assault in December 2022. Smith was sentenced to seven-and-a-half years in prison in February.

The incident led former prime minister Sir Keir Starmer to encourage Boydell to engage with governmental authorities on enhancing safety measures. The critique followed her cancellation of a scheduled meeting with MPs.

Ray Reidy emphasised the firm's dedication to guest safety, stating: “We remain focused on the safety and wellbeing of our guests and will continue taking the actions necessary to strengthen the business.

“We will also continue to engage proactively and constructively with Government and the wider hospitality industry on the issue of safety and security.”
