The Tesla car company owned by the controversial billionaire Elon Musk is gearing up to occupy a new facility in Reading.

Tesla has been established as a leading electric car make since 2012, when its trademark Model S was launched in the USA, and later in the UK in 2014.

Initially founded by businessmen Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning in 2003, with Elon Musk taking over as CEO in 2008.

Mr Musk has become a controversial public figure, while he was lauded for innovations in green technology, opinions have become divided after he bought Twitter in 2022 and endorsed Donald Trump during the US Presidential Election in 2024.

The first Tesla dealership in Reading was established in Basingstoke Road, on a site previously occupied by a Peugeot dealer.

Now the company is set to occupy a newly built facility near Reading International Business Park.

The facility, called Reading Logistics Park, was only recently completed.

Now, Tesla could take over one of the units into a service area and a small showroom in a planning application to Reading Borough Council.

A document by ELG Planning states: “Our client intends to use it as a car servicing centre and bodyshop, vehicle delivery ‘hub’, and ancillary car showroom.

“The car servicing and bodyshop space will be used for the servicing, maintenance and general repair work to vehicles.

“The showroom provides an opportunity – primarily for existing visiting Tesla customers – to view new Tesla models whilst making use of the servicing centre."
