Free sustainability advice is being handed out in Basingstoke in the first of a series of 'eco drop-ins' .

These ‘pop ups’ at community centres and halls are a new initiative by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council’s Green Team to bring free eco-friendly guidance and support into the hearts of local neighbourhoods and villages across the borough.

People who pop in will get free advice on how to save money and cut carbon by living in a more planet friendly way. And they will also be able to take part in interactive workshops led by specialists on topics like eco-friendly gardening, building bug hotels and upcycling waste into arts and crafts, among others.

Today's drop-in (3 April) is at the Irish centre in the town centre. Another two ‘drop ins’ have already been arranged at Beggarwood Community Centre on Wednesday 30 April and Oakridge Hall for All on Monday 9 June.

Tips

Cabinet Member for Climate and Ecological Emergency Cllr Chris Tomblin said: “With easy top tips and activities you can enjoy with friends and family that will help you cut carbon, save money and encourage wildlife, these ‘pop ups’ aim to make going greener as convenient as possible by bringing our specialists’ support within a few steps or short cycle ride from your home.

“This includes giving you the chance to learn about grants that could fully fund energy-saving improvements, like solar panels, and which plants best help wildlife like bees and butterflies thrive. You’ll also be able to book free home visits with our experts to get more tailored advice for saving energy and turning your outdoor space into a nature haven.

“There’s always so much going on at our community centres and so I encourage you to keep an eye on our social media to find out when our specialists will be near you.”
