Reading private school to close after 132 years
Significant financial pressures lead to the closure of St Joseph’s College
The Board of Governors has announced the closure of St Joseph’s College in Reading, ending its over a century-long legacy of education at the end of this term (10 July).
The closure decision was described as "heartbreaking" by the board, acknowledging the efforts from various stakeholders, including the Save St Joseph’s College Parents Group and staff, to propose solutions to keep the college open.
Efforts explored by the Board of Governors, supported by the Head and the Interim Bursar, included potential acquisitions, mergers with other schools and seeking financial investments from parties such as the Sisters of St Marie Madeleine Postel. However, none of these avenues provided a sustainable solution.
According to the college's Chair of Governors, Mrs Hilary Buckle, rising costs have posed significant financial challenges, alongside the introduction of VAT on fees and the removal of business rate relief. Mrs Buckle expressed gratitude towards everyone who attempted to help, stating that unfortunately, no viable solution could be found:
“This is an announcement which no Board of Governors ever wants to make. We want to express our sincere thanks to everyone who came forward with suggestions to keep the school open, but unfortunately none of these were able to provide a sustainable future for St Joseph’s College.
"I want to thank all of the staff at St Joseph’s who have continued to work so hard to ensure the final term for our pupils has been a success, with every planned activity still taking place."
Despite the looming closure, the college community was determined to end on a high note with planned events including a musical performance, a prep production, and a Prize Giving ceremony this week.
Head of the College, Mrs Laura Stotesbury, acknowledged the support from local schools and authorities in securing new placements for affected pupils and staff for the upcoming academic year.
Mrs Laura Stotesbury also stated: “This is an extremely sad day for the whole college community. I would like to add my thanks to all my colleagues who have continued to show such commitment to the college and our children.
"I am deeply proud to have led the college and to have been able to contribute to the lasting legacy of St Joseph’s."
St Joseph’s College, located on Upper Redlands Road, has served the community for 132 years.
