Shaw House adds a playground
It is being added soon
Work has begun on a new playground at Shaw House.
West Berkshire Council has announced that construction work will last for just under two weeks.
Funded through the Community Infrastructure Levy (where developers pay the council a fee), the new play area is expected to open later this summer.
At its centre will be a ‘Great Hall’ play structure inspired by Shaw House’s historic architecture, encouraging imaginative play while connecting children to the site’s heritage, which dates back to 1581.
It is on the old netball court, from when Shaw House was a school, and the playground will combine traditional equipment.
Inclusive features to support a wide range of needs include sensory panels for quieter, accessible play, also a nest swing, accessible carousel and balance trails.
Designed to complement the historic setting, the space will use natural materials alongside durable, low-maintenance surfaces.
Accessible paths and safety surfacing will ensure it is practical and welcoming for all.
Nigel Foot (Lib Dem, Newbury Clay Hill), executive member for culture, leisure, sport and countryside said: “This is a really exciting addition to Shaw House and a great boost for local families.
“It’s fantastic to be creating a space where children can play, explore and engage with the history of the house in a fun and imaginative way.”
Alongside the new play area, an enhanced catering offer including freshly prepared panninis will be available from Gladys, the on-site catering trailer.
An opening celebration is being planned for the summer, with more information to be shared in due course.
The project forms part of a wider programme of improvements at Shaw House, including newly dressed rooms and the creation of Tudor and Edwardian gardens, helping to bring its history to life for visitors.
