Members of the Hampshire fire and rescue service community Safety team have held a meeting with landowners and land managers from across North Hampshire for a dedicated wildfire prevention focus group.

The fire service say it was an open conversation about the growing risks of wildfires and how we can work collaboratively to reduce them.

During the session (led by Community Safety Development Officer Kelly Hedges and Engagement Officer Jason Evans), participants shared real‑world experiences of managing land in increasingly hot, dry conditions. They explored:

How confident people feel in responding to wildfire risks

The practical challenges they face on the ground

Where they currently go for advice, information and support

Participants agreed risk is increasing due to hotter, drier conditions, dry ground (including underground root fires), and greater public use of countryside spaces. A key message was that any fire in the open can become a wildfire if conditions are right.

The main causes of wildfires included disposable barbeques, campfires, discarded cigarettes, wild camping, and occasional arson. Concerns were also raised about discarded lithium‑ion batteries.

Safer

HIWFRS Community Safety Development Officer Kelly Hedges said:

“I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who took part. Collaboration like this is essential as we continue working together to prevent wildfires and build safer, more resilient communities.”

The meeting also discussed how the Service can strengthen communication, guidance and hands‑on support for those working in high‑risk areas and the new prevention resources that will be soon be available.
