NHS steps up efforts to get Berkshire patients home ahead of winter
Efforts to get patients out of hospital and recovering at home are being stepped up ahead of the winter months
The NHS says the South East continues to face significant pressure, with the region recording the highest number of delayed hospital bed days in England.
Health services are working with councils and community organisations to make sure patients who are medically fit can leave hospital safely, with appropriate support at home.
At the Royal Berkshire Hospital, reducing the length of time patients spend in hospital has also been a priority.
Recent trust figures showed the average stay for non-elective patients was 7.2 days in April, compared with a target of fewer than seven days.
The Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust operates a "home first" approach, saying patients generally recover better at home and unnecessary time in hospital can lead to a loss of strength and independence.
The NHS says getting patients home sooner can also free up beds and ease pressure on emergency departments and ambulance services ahead of winter.
