Newbury's Shaw house unveils Tudor garden

It was funded by the UK prosperity fund

Work on a newly designed Tudor Garden at Shaw House near Newbury is now complete.

Designed by horticulturist and designer, Andrea Fearon from Ivy Hill Garden Design, the community space has been created with relaxation in mind and to enjoy views of Shaw House.

While the plants are all true to a Tudor period garden, the style in which they have been planted offers a contemporary interpretation; with ornamentals, herbs and vegetables being mixed in the borders rather than separated into dedicated spaces.

Councillor Nigel Foot, West Berkshire’s Executive Member for Culture, Leisure, Sport and Countryside said,

“The Tudor Garden project at Shaw House has been an exciting initiative. It was made possible through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund grant but has come to life through the imagination and careful planning from our Community Services officers in collaboration with Shaw House and a wonderful team of volunteers. We are delighted to see the garden completed now and for it to provide such an enhancement to the House”.

“We would like to give special thanks to our wonderful volunteers, who not only helped to bring the project to life with the meticulous planting, but who will also be helping to maintain the garden as part of our Community Garden sessions.”

The garden is now open, but as the planting took place during the winter months, visitors are encouraged to return during the summer months to see the garden in full bloom. Elevated views of the garden can be enjoyed from the first-floor windows of the House during public opening hours and can also be explored during the day for gentle strolls around the grounds.

Shaw House is open to the public every weekend 11am – 4pm until the end of September, and Monday to Friday 10am – 4pm during school holidays.
