Nurse from Newbury charged over Police arrest death

The charge is in connection with the death of a man arrested in 2020

A nurse has been charged with gross negligence manslaughter and a health and safety offence over the 2020 death of a man who was arrested in Berkshire.

Sean Cregg, 35, from Newbury in Berkshire, faces the charges over the death of William Cameron, 38, who was arrested and taken to Loddon Valley police station near Reading on January 8 2020, before he died in hospital later that day.

Cregg was working for Mountain Healthcare at the time, which provided services for Thames Valley Police. He was working in the police station as a custody nurse.

He is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on July 1.

Review

Malcolm McHaffie, from the Crown Prosecution Service, said: “Following a review of the evidence from the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), we have authorised criminal charges against a healthcare professional after the death of William Cameron, 38, in 2020.

“Mr Cameron died after being taken in custody at Loddon Valley police station, near Reading in Berkshire on January 8 2020.

“Sean Cregg, 35, a nurse employed by Mountain Healthcare at the time, has been charged with gross negligence manslaughter and an offence under Section 7 of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974.

“No further individuals have been charged in connection with this case.”
