It's part of the town's regeneration masterplan

The project to create the new riverside park near Western Avenue in Andover has taken a huge leap forward this week after securing planning permission.

The decision at the planning committee meeting marks a major milestone in the delivery of the Andover Town Centre Masterplan, paving the way for the transformation of a hidden stretch of the River Anton and turning it into a public space.

By changing the road layout and creating a space for inviting landscapes and accessible pathways along the river, the new riverside park will reconnect the town, offering improved walking and cycling routes, and spaces for community life and celebration. The changes will also help create a seamless connection between the western side of the town, the river, Town Mills riverside park and the new venue for The Lights theatre.

Transformation

Councillor Phil North, Leader of Test Valley Borough Council, said: “This is a hugely exciting moment for Andover. The new riverside park will be a place for everyone - a green, inclusive and inspiring space that reflects the aspirations of our community and the character of our town. And it will perfectly complement the new theatre project, which is also moving at pace. I’m incredibly proud of the collaborative work that has brought us to this point, and I look forward to seeing the transformation take shape.”

Timetable

Construction is expected to begin in late 2026, with further opportunities for community involvement throughout the detailed design and delivery phases.
