A prolific shoplifter who repeatedly targeted businesses in Thatcham has been jailed.

Andrew Woodhouse, 39, of Cochrane Close, was sentenced at Reading Crown Court to 60 weeks in prison, after pleading guilty to five counts of theft from a shop.

Woodhouse admitted stealing alcohol and meat products from retailers including Waitrose in Thatcham on five separate occasions between March and August this year.

PC Harry Downes, of the Thatcham Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “Persistent offenders who repeatedly target local businesses should expect to be brought before the courts.

“Andrew Woodhouse’s offending caused financial loss and disruption to retailers in our community and, despite being given previous opportunities to change his behaviour through a suspended sentence order, he chose to continue committing offences.

“Thanks to the work of officers and retail staff in gathering evidence, Woodhouse was identified, arrested and brought to justice.

“We hope this sentence reassures businesses that reports of shoplifting are taken seriously and that we will continue to work with retailers to identify offenders, build strong cases and put repeat criminals before the courts.”
