A man has been jailed for 32 weeks after he assaulted two police officers in Basingstoke.

Steven Carver, 42, of no fixed abode, was charged with two counts of assaulting a constable in the execution of his / her duty and criminal damage to property valued under £5,000.

It comes after officers responded to a report of an intoxicated man on Western Way at around 1.40am on Tuesday 8 July.

A spokesperson for the force said:

"The man became violent and assaulted an officer at the scene. He later spat inside a police vehicle and cell and assaulted another officer.

"Carver pleaded guilty and was jailed for 32 weeks at Basingstoke Magistrates Court yesterday (9 July)."

Basingstoke Town Inspector, Charlie Ilderton, said: “No emergency worker should be subjected to violence. It is not, and never will be, part of the job description.

"I hope this result highlights that this behaviour will not be tolerated in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight."
