Driver jailed for 18 months after dangerous driving incident in Basingstoke
A 17-year-old boy needed surgery for injuries he suffered
A woman from Basingstoke has been sentenced to 18 months in prison after causing serious injury to a teenage cyclist in a hit-and-run incident.
Tanya Johnston, 47, collided with a 17-year-old boy at the junction of Norn Hill and Lefroy Avenue on the night of 20th February 2023.
She fled the scene after the crash but later handed herself in to the police two days following the incident.
The Incident
Johnston was driving a blue Vauxhall Corsa when she turned into a junction on the wrong side of the road.
Her fogged-up windscreen obscured her view, according to her admission during police interviews.
The collision resulted in severe head injuries for the cyclist, requiring facial reconstruction surgery.
He will have life-long scarring.
Legal Proceedings
Johnston was sentenced for causing serious injury by careless driving and for dangerous driving after leaving the scene.
She pled guilty to both charges at Winchester Crown Court on 2nd July.
Hampshire Police Sergeant James Hall commented on the situation, noting Johnston's "utter disregard for the safety of others" and praised the victim for his maturity throughout the investigation.
In addition to her prison sentence, Johnston faces a driving ban for an additional two years upon her release.
