A 29-year-old man from East Ilsley has been jailed for assaulting a man and committing multiple thefts.

Haydon Lucas, of Downside, East Ilsley, was sentenced to six weeks in prison after being found guilty at Reading Magistrates’ Court on 18th November of various offences, including two counts of theft, one count of assault by beating, and breaching a closure order.

Lucas stole baked goods and other items from Budgens on Cavendish Road in Emmer Green, Reading on 27th August. During the same incident, he assaulted a man in his fifties, leaving the victim with bruising.

Lucas also stole two bottles of alcohol, worth £90, from Marks & Spencer on Northbrook Street, Newbury on 6th October, and breached a closure order when he remained on premises at Fullers Court, Newbury, on 16th November.

He was arrested on the same day as the closure order breach and charged on 17th November.

Investigating officer, PC Alasdair Ferrie, said: “Following our investigation, Haydon Lucas was arrested by officers from Newbury Response Team 2.

"He was charged, remanded into custody and sentenced to six week's imprisonment.

"His repeat offending targeted stores and shop workers, stealing for personal gain and using threats and violence to escape.

"He also showed a blatant disregard for a court order by breaching a closure order in Newbury.

"We are pleased he has been sentenced to imprisonment which will serve to protect local people and businesses from further offending during the busy Christmas period.”
