The former mayor of Bracknell, and her son, have been jailed for stalling police, after he raped a 15-year-old girl.
Naheed Ejaz, 61, has been sentenced to three years in jail for perverting the course of justice after serving as the first Muslim mayor of Bracknell Forest Council from May 2023.
Her son, Diwan Khan, 41, received a 12-year sentence after being convicted of raping a 15-year-old girl and pleading guilty to perverting the course of justice.
Hiding Evidence
Khan, who's criminal history includes a conviction in 2013 for cocaine possession, was convicted for the assault that occurred in July 2024 in the Fleet/Farnborough area after supplying the victim with vodka mixed with MDMA.
He filmed the attack while the girl was unconscious and dropped off her friend at home before the incident, according to Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary’s Child Abuse Investigation Team who conducted the investigation.
The crime was reported to the police on 10th September 2024 by a third party.
Upon visiting Khan's residence on 12th September, officers encountered resistance from Khan's mother, Naheed Ejaz, who delayed opening the door while discussing with her son in Urdu the concealment of evidence.
The conversation was later translated and Ejaz was arrested. Despite multiple searches, the phone has not been found.
A jury found Khan guilty of one count of rape. He had previously admitted a charge of perverting the course of justice.
Ejaz, also of Abbotsbury, Bracknell, Berkshire, was found guilty of a charge of perverting the course of justice.
Sentenced
Today (Thursday 30 April), both defendants were sentenced at Winchester Crown Court.
Khan was jailed for a total of 12 years, and must serve at least eight years before any chance of parole. The sentence includes a five-year extended licence period upon release.
Khan was also made subject to a sexual harm prevention order for 20 years, an indefinite restraining order, and will have to sign the sex offenders register for life.
He has also been barred from any work or voluntary role involving children for life.
Ejaz was jailed for three years, and must serve at least 16 months before any chance of parole.
Speaking after the hearing, officer in the case Detective Constable Lee Clement said: “The victim in this case has shown considerable bravery during the investigation, and in having to relive her experience in court.
“This attack continues to have a significant impact on her mental health. We hope that this result helps in some way in her recovery.
“Khan targeted a vulnerable teenage girl, and then, along with his mother Ejaz, tried to cover up evidence to hinder our investigation. Khan is deservedly behind bars, and we always believed that Ejaz’s behaviour stepped over the threshold into criminality.
“We hope that this result will give confidence to others who have experience these type of offences. You will be listened to and supported, and we have specially trained officers to investigate these offences.”
Aftermath
Bracknell Forest Council has removed Ejaz's portrait from Time Square headquarters, and Chief Executive Susan Halliwell expressed her thoughts to Khan’s victim and her family.
While serving as his mother's mayoral consort, Khan's taxi licence was revoked as investigations into his criminal activities unfolded.
The council leader, Helen Purnell, has initiated an investigation into past council actions and decision-making, focusing on protecting women and girls.
Councillor Helen Purnell stated: “As a mother and former police officer, I am relieved that both Diwan Khan and Naheed Ejaz have faced the full force of the law for their terrible crimes."
"My thoughts remain with the victim of these crimes.”
