An inquest has commenced into the tragic death of Samuel Murphy, a 14-year-old boy from Camberley, Surrey, who vanished while swimming in a lake amid a recent heatwave.

The hearing at Winchester Coroner’s Court identified Samuel Murphy, focusing on events leading to his disappearance at Hawley Lake, near Blackwater, at 3.28pm on 26th May.

Hampshire Constabulary launched a comprehensive “multi-agency operation” to locate Samuel, employing marine and drone units, the National Police Air Service, Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service, and Metropolitan Police divers assisted by the Army.

His body was discovered on the afternoon following his disappearance.

Cause of death investigation

During the brief inquest hearing, it was revealed that the cause of death has yet to be established, with further investigations underway.

The inquest has been adjourned for a full hearing on 6th July 2027, allowing time for comprehensive findings to be gathered.
