Basingstoke MP Luke Murphy will lead a parliamentary debate on the enduring cultural, economic and social contribution of Jane Austen, born in Steventon near Basingstoke, in 1775.

Earlier this week the 250th anniversary of her birth was marked.

The MP says the debate (on Thursday 18 December) is a chance to celebrate Austen’s legacy as “a reminder of the deep, optimistic, creative tradition that should make us proud to be British.”

It will spotlight Austen’s contribution to Britain’s literary heritage, her longstanding economic impact at home and abroad, and the role she played in shaping greater agency and visibility for women in public and private life.

“Jane Austen’s legacy is a compelling part of our national story; of creativity, insight, humour and profound social change,” Murphy said. “Her influence reaches around the world, and as we mark the 250th anniversary of her birth, it reminds us of what British culture has given to the world.

“She was born in Steventon, right here in my constituency of Basingstoke, yet her influence reaches around the world. Her work is part of our national story of creativity, insight, humour and quiet but profound social change.

“Whether it’s visitors coming to Hampshire to explore Austen’s birthplace, or global audiences watching adaptations of her work, her legacy continues to support local jobs and Britain’s creative industries.

“She wrote women with intelligence, agency and complexity, and in doing so, she helped lay foundations for the rights and opportunities women have fought for since.

“At this moment, we should be celebrating what unites us and what we have contributed to the world. Austen’s creativity, wit and moral depth is something we can all be proud of."
