Youth homelessness is continuing to rise across Hertfordshire with over 2800 young people contacting Hertfordshire County Council last year due to homelessness or risk of homelessness.

That figure is a 13% increase on the previous year.

Courtney D'Souza from Herts Young Homeless who are working to break the cycle of youth homelessness across the county said:

"That is just the number of people that have reported it. So that could mean that's not actually a true number, it could be greater because young people are sofa surfing or moving from place to place and that can go under the radar and they may not know that they are classed as homeless."

Next Friday the St Albans Sleepout is taking place at Oaklands College to help raise awareness of the issue and raise vital funds to help support vulnerable people this winter.

The event was started by the Abbey and Diocese in the 1990s and has raised hundreds of thousands for Hertfordshire homeless charities since.

This year five local charities, Centre 33, Emmaus, Herts Young Homeless (hyh), Open Door and The Living Room, will benefit from the sponsorship money raised.

The sleepout is taking place on Friday 7th November 2025 - you can find out more here.
