Whipsnade Zoo’s penguins set for a festive feast this Christmas
Special Christmas treats are funded by visitor donations
As many of us will be sitting down to turkey, pigs in blankets, and Christmas pudding tomorrow, the penguins at Whipsnade Zoo in Bedfordshire will enjoy a festive feast of their own.
The penguins will be treated to sprats and herring for Christmas dinner, according to Senior bird keeper Emily Merrick-White. She explained that while sprats are a regular indulgence for the penguins – likened to their “chocolate treat”. Meanwhile, herring is a more special addition as it cannot be sustainably sourced throughout the year.
The festive treats, along with the daily meals for animals at Whipsnade Zoo, are funded by donations from visitors and supporters.
ZSL, the charity that runs the zoo, relies on these donations not only to provide for the animals but also to carry out vital conservation work around the globe.
Penguins’ festive excitement
While the zoo is closed to visitors on Christmas Day, keepers revel in giving animals seasonal treats.
Describing the penguins’ reactions to their festive feast, Ms Merrick-White said, “They swim a lot more and the rockhoppers will be shouting a lot more. They follow us around and seem to pick up on the excitement in the atmosphere. For us keepers, working on Christmas Day feels different – there’s always good vibes.”
Other animals at Whipsnade also enjoy Christmas-themed treats and activities, including the zoo’s rhea’s, who will receive a Christmas cauliflower from keepers.
Festive Dinners campaign
Funds from ZSL’s Festive Dinners appeal will contribute to feeding endangered species, supporting breeding programmes, habitat restorations, and conservation science.
Hannah Eaton, ZSL’s Fundraising Manager, emphasised the importance of the appeal, saying, “Feeding time at the Zoo might seem light-hearted, but covering the cost of a lion’s lunch or a parrot’s breakfast will make a big difference to our work. Thanks to match-funding, every donation made this Christmas will go twice as far to help us protect species, restore habitats, and support conservation science.”
Those who donate will also receive a Festive Dinners Certificate to recognise their support, making it a great seasonal gift to share or keep as a reminder of a meaningful contribution. Visit ZSL’s Festive Dinners campaign to learn more and donate.
