The University of Hertfordshire have paid tribute to one of their students, who died following an incident in the Great River Ouse.

It's believed 24 year old Leela Sai Reddy Mallireddy got into difficulty around 10pm on 3rd April and was rushed to hospital in a critical condition.

Leela, who was originally from India, died several days later, with the Coroner concluding his death was caused by diffuse hypoxic brain injury with proven brain stem death and drowning at an inquest earlier this month.

Geri Ward, Dean of Students at the University of Hertfordshire, said:

“It is with great sadness that I can confirm the death of one of our students. Leela was a much‑valued member of our University community, he was engaged with his studies and he was known and respected by staff and fellow students.

“Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with his family, friends, and all those affected at this incredibly difficult time. We recognise that there may be information circulating online that is distressing, and we would respectfully ask that the privacy of those involved is respected, and that people are mindful and compassionate when sharing comments or information, particularly online.

The University is a close community of students and staff, and our Wellbeing Services are available to support anyone who may be impacted by this news.”
