Thames Valley police budget includes council tax increase for some
Last updated 23rd Jan 2026
The Police and Crime Commissioner for Thames Valley has announced his new budget for the force, with an increase in council tax on the way
Conservative Matthew Barber says Thames Valley Police received £9million less funding than expected from central government.
TVP's total budget will be £622million pounds for 2026-27, and the average household will pay approximately £15 more a year.
Mr Barber has pledged 53 more neighbourhood officers, and says the increase in council tax will "ensure the force can maintain policing levels."
He added: “I am acutely aware of the financial pressures households are under, however due to this challenging economic environment, I have made the decision to increase Council Tax contributions by 29p per week for a Band D property.
"This increase will ensure the force can maintain policing levels, keep communities safe and address the policing priorities of residents identified through my ongoing local crime survey.
"Despite these financial pressures, I am determined that our local police force will continue to grow to support our community."
A new dedicated Roads Policing Unit Tasking Team has also been announced, with the aim of cracking down on dangerous and illegal drivers.
Chief Constable of Thames Valley Police, Jason Hogg, commented: “The Council Tax precept provides essential additional funding at a time when national police funding remains challenging.
"However, this investment is not guaranteed, and policing continues to face significant cost pressures and difficult choices as we work to balance our budget responsibly.
The government has been contacted for a response.
