Thames Valley Police are reminding motorists to think carefully before getting behind the wheel this summer, warning that both alcohol and drugs can have a serious impact on driving ability.
Officers say while many people recognise the risks associated with drink and illegal substances, some prescription medications can also affect reaction times, concentration and decision-making.
Drivers are being urged to familiarise themselves with any side effects before travelling.
Chief Superintendent Ian Taylor said:
"Our message will always be don't drink any alcohol if you are the designated driver and that way you can be 100% sure that you're not going to breach the drink drive limit or the manor of your driving is impacted, you are then involved in an accident that has repercussions to others and yourself."
"Some people are on prescribed drugs that can also impair driving, they carry warning signs not to drive because it can cause drowsiness. If you are impaired and driving you run the risk of facing the criminal justice system as a consequence of that."
The force is encouraging people to plan ahead and make responsible choices, stressing that anyone who is impaired by drink or drugs could be putting themselves and other road users at risk.
Ian Taylor added:
"Remember how long alcohol stays in your system. So if you're going to drive the next day obviously just factor in that you potentially could still be over the legal limit and I wouldn't want anyone to fall foul of that so the message to keep it simple and clear is have zero"
