A Reform UK member of Hertfordshire County Council (HCC) has resigned, less than a year after he was elected with a majority of 28 votes.

Tony Hill won the Flamstead End and Turnford division in Broxbourne borough from veteran Conservative Mark Mills-Bishop, polling 1,197 votes to his Tory rival’s 1,169, in last May’s election.

But now, just 10 months later, he has stepped down, opening the way for a possible by-election.

Notice of the vacancy has been published on the county council’s website. But no by-election will be called until a request is made in writing by two electors from within the county.

A spokesperson for HCC said on Tuesday (March 10): “Cllr Hill has resigned and the Notice of Casual Vacancy was published yesterday.

“A date for the by-election has not been confirmed as yet. A Notice of Election with all the details (once finalised) will be published in due course.”

Last May, 14 Reform UK members were elected to the county council, making it the third largest party on the authority behind the Liberal Democrats with 31 and the Conservatives with 22. There were also five Greens, five Labour and one independent.

Since then, Cllr Tina Bhartwas (Letchworth North) left the Labour Party to represent the Lib Dem, former HCC executive member Cllr Caroline Clapper (Watling) defected from the Conservatives to Reform and Cllr Peter Colley (Stevenage Bedwell) moved from Reform to Restore Britain.
