Planning permission has been formally granted to redevelop the former Shredded Wheat factory site in Welwyn Garden City.

Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council has issued a decision notice for the Wheat Quarter plan, which is being developed by property developer IJM.

The notice follows the completion of a legal agreement known as a Section 106 Agreement, and the final steps required under the Development Management Committee's resolution to approve the application.

What the plans include

The long-vacant industrial site at Broadwater Road is set to become a mixed-use neighbourhood.

It will include new homes alongside commercial, leisure and community uses.

Key historic buildings on the site will be kept and given new uses.

The plans include restoring and repurposing the Grade II-listed former Shredded Wheat silos, which will be the focal point of a new public square.

The council said the decision brings a prominent brownfield site back into use and supports the vitality of the town centre.

Council reaction

Councillor Rose Grewal, leader of Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council and executive member for planning, said:

"The Wheat Quarter is one of the most important regeneration opportunities in our borough, and I am delighted that planning permission has now been formally granted. This is a major milestone for Welwyn Garden City.

"The approved scheme will bring a long-vacant site back into use, provide new homes and investment, create new opportunities for residents and visitors, and secure the future of some of the town's most iconic buildings.

"I would like to thank everyone who has been involved in bringing the project to this point, including residents, stakeholders, councillors, officers and the applicant's team."
