Engineer checked 'smell of gas' before explosion in Newton Longville

An engineer was sent to investigate reports of a gas smell Newton Longville hours before an explosion at a nearby bungalow.

The explosion happened on Cobb Hall Road on Sunday, 9th August, and prompted a coordinated response from emergency services and local authorities.

One person was injured and taken to hospital, where they remain, while nearby residents were evacuated as emergency crews dealt with the scene.

SGN say a separate gas incident was reported at another property in the area, with an engineer arriving within 16 minutes to survey the site and check neighbouring properties.

The company also said that all the relevant information information gathered during the emergency response is being shared with the authorities.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and the Police are leading the investigation into the causes of both the explosion and the gas escape.

More than £4,000 has been raised to support the man seriously injured the explosion, with the village rallying around him and his injured dog.
