New Red Panda joins animals at Hertfordshire Zoo
It's hoped the move will help conservation efforts for the species
A young female Red Panda's moved to Hertfordshire Zoo.
Nila, who is one year and five months old has joined from Národná zoologická záhrada Bojnice in Slovakia as part of the EAZA Ex-situ Programme (EEP), an international effort to protect endangered species.
She’s been paired with resident male Red Panda, Ash, forming a vital part of global Red Panda conservation. The zoo says there are fewer than 10,000 Red Pandas left in the wild and every breeding success helps secure the future of this precious species.
Nila’s name honours a Nepalese conservationist whose work with the Red Panda Network, one of Hertfordshire Zoo’s key partners, supports habitat restoration and community education in Nepal.
