A medieval burial site in Buckingham has been formally recorded after investigations revealed unusual and disturbing features.

Buckinghamshire Council confirmed that at least 73 individuals were found across 34 graves during archaeological work that began in 2018. Most burials were adults, primarily males, and 26 skeletons were discovered with their hands tied behind their backs. The remains showed signs of childhood stress, healed fractures, and diseases such as tuberculosis. Only a few artefacts were recovered, including two buckles dating to the late Roman and post-medieval periods. Carbon dating of one skeleton suggests the burials began in the late 13th century.

The unusual arrangements and lack of grave goods indicate the site was likely used as an execution cemetery, historically reserved for criminals and socially marginalised groups.

Councillor Peter Strachan, Cabinet Member for Planning and Regeneration, said: “Our archaeology team has worked tirelessly to ensure this remarkable site was properly investigated. The discovery of what is likely a medieval execution burial ground offers a rare glimpse into Buckinghamshire’s past. We are committed to preserving and sharing these findings with the local community so that everyone can appreciate the depth of our county’s history.”

He added: “I thank members of the local community and local councillors in Buckingham for their tireless interest in this site – this dedication has helped to maintain momentum in discovering so much more about what happened to these people in our past.”

Post-excavation analysis will continue, with results published to provide a full record of the site and further understanding of life in Buckinghamshire during the Saxon and medieval periods.
