More than 500 wildfire calls in Hertfordshire already this summer
Specialist vehicles equipped with high-pressure misting units have been helping crews
Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service is facing increased demand during the summer of 2026, with over 500 emergency calls related to wildfires and fires on open ground since June.
The recent hot and dry weather conditions have led to a significant rise in such incidents, emphasising the need for rapid response and effective intervention.
As of 1st June 2026, 574 wildfire-related calls have already been registered, highlighting the mounting pressure on the service.
Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service says it is deploying specialist vehicles equipped with the E1 Nebula high-pressure water misting system to help address these challenges.
These vehicles, which are fitted with a 175-litre water tank, are crucial for reaching areas that standard fire engines may struggle to access, such as narrow rural lanes and uneven terrain.
The Natural England Fire Severity Index is very high, with prolonged warm and dry weather creating ideal conditions for fires to spread quickly.
Chief Fire Officer Alex Woodman said: "The recent hot and dry conditions have led to an increase in fires in the open across Hertfordshire, and wildfires can be particularly demanding. These incidents can take a considerable physical toll on crews working in challenging conditions and places additional pressure on emergency resources.
"Our high-pressure water misting system vehicles are a valuable asset, helping crews reach incidents quickly and bring fires under control sooner, reducing the impact on firefighters while protecting local communities, countryside and wildlife."
Hertfordshire's fire service is urging residents and visitors to practise caution during this period, advising against open fires, ensuring responsible disposal of smoking materials, avoiding disposable barbecues in open spaces, and reporting fires immediately by calling 999.
