Milton Keynes Labour MP says the party needs to consider “the right way forward”
The Labour party lost control of Milton Keynes City Council
The Labour party has lost its overall majority of Milton Keynes City Council after winning 19 seats out of a possible 60.
The authority is under no overall control, but Liberal Democrats won the most seats (20) meaning they can decide whether to form a coalition with another party or work under a minority administration.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said yesterday that he takes responsibility for a “tough” set of local election results in England, where hundreds of Labour councillors have been voted out.
Starmer also insists he will carry on as Prime Minister, despite suffering huge losses.
Emily Darlington, MP for Milton Keynes Central did not say whether she fully-supported the Prime Minister or not.
Speaking to Greatest Hits Radio, she said: “We need to go away and actually think about, and feedback, not just what voters in Milton Keynes are saying, but voters across the country.
“We need to come back together in Westminster and think what's the right way forward.
“I'm always more about the policies than the personalities and that's always been my way in politics.”
She added: “It's not as great as we would like it to be, but let's be honest, in the current circumstances, Milton Keynes has done quite well.
“If you look at the anti-Reform UK vote across Milton Keynes, that is overwhelming - I think that's because Milton Keynes really values its diversity.”
Chris Curtis, Labour MP for Milton Keynes North said: “We've lost the leader of Milton Keynes Council today who has stood down after 12 years doing a brilliant job..
“I couldn't deal with losing two leaders at the same time.
“Voters across the country were sick to death of the Tories, recycling through leader time and again, and again, and again.
“I get why people are asking questions about leadership, I really do, but actually I think the question is much bigger than that.”
