A man has been jailed after being found asleep in a victim's home following a series of burglaries in Hemel Hempstead.

Nelson Loveridge, 36, appeared before Luton Crown Court on Friday, where he was sentenced to three years and nine months in prison.

He was arrested in April this year after police were called to an address in the Long Chaulden area.

It was reported that an elderly man had woken up at 7:30am to discover two windows had been smashed in his living room and that items had been strewn across the floor.

He then discovered Loveridge asleep in a spare bedroom and alerted the police.

The 36-year-old was then linked to other burglary and attempted burglary attempts in the early hours of the same day, in neighbouring roads.

During a burglary earlier on the morning, a woman awoke to find Loveridge standing on the landing in her home with a crowbar, demanding money and jewellery. She then chased the male out the front door before he ran off.

Loveridge, of Honeycross Road in Hemel Hempstead, was subsequently charged and remanded into custody, where he has remained ever since.

He pleaded guilty to all offences during a hearing on Tuesday 26 May.

Detective Constable Jake Smith, who led the investigation, said: “Waking up to discover someone has tried to break into your home is distressing, but finding an intruder inside your property is a truly traumatic experience, as the victims in this case sadly experienced.

“I’m pleased that Loveridge accepted responsibility for his actions by pleading guilty at an early opportunity.

“CCTV footage provided by local residents played an integral role in progressing our investigation, and I would like to thank everyone who supported us as we worked to bring him to justice.”
