The MP for Luton North has announced she is suspending face-to-face surgeries following three recent 'security incidents'.

Labour's Sarah Owen says in the last three weeks, there have been three disturbances during surgery sessions, leading to the arrest of two men.

The MP expressed regret over the suspension, emphasising that it will continue until assurances can be made regarding the safety of both the team and attendees:

"Something wonderful about British society is being lost because of the dehumanisation of others.

"I pride myself on being an accessible MP and love meeting residents. The impact that threats to safety have on democracy means an increasing tension between accessibility and safety.

"I will always be there for residents and deliver for Luton North - I will continue to serve our town. Luton is my home and no one is going to stop me loving it or my chance to represent the wonderful people in our town."

In her Facebook post, Owen added that "alternatives for direct contact will be arranged".

Superintendent Hobibul Hoque from Bedfordshire Police said: “We are committed to ensuring that Members of Parliament across our county feel safe and supported to engage with their communities as part of their democratic duties

“The force’s Operation Bridger response includes a dedicated parliamentary liaison officer who works closely with Members of Parliament living in Bedfordshire.

“Over the weekend we were made aware of reports of concerning behaviour and malicious communications towards Sarah Owen MP. A man in his 40s has since been arrested on suspicion of stalking and remains in police custody.

“This follows two unrelated incidents regarding the same MP. As a result of our investigations, one man received a conditional caution while another remains on bail pending further enquiries.

“Following this latest incident, we are reviewing our Operation Bridger response and will be working closely with Ms Owen’s office to establish whether any additional preventative measures can be put in place.”
