Luton man jailed for crash that paralysed firefighter in Watford
Samuel Powell sentenced after causing serious injury by dangerous driving
Samuel Powell has been sentenced to three years and four months in jail for causing a crash that left a firefighter paralysed.
The incident occurred on the morning of 18th August 2023, when Powell's vehicle collided with a cyclist at the junction of A41 Northwestern Avenue and A405 in Watford.
The cyclist, then 25, suffered serious injuries and will now rely on a wheelchair for life.
Despite his injuries, he remains determined to stay active, joining a wheelchair triathlon club as part of his rehabilitation.
Powell, 29, from The Belfry, Luton, faced charges of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and was found guilty after a trial at St Albans Crown Court in September.
The court heard evidence that Powell's mobile phone was displaying TikTok videos around the time of the collision, with no phone holder present in his vehicle.
Detective Constable James McAlister praised the victim's courage, saying the result offers some closure despite the ordeal of a criminal trial due to Powell's denial.
He highlighted the dangers of distracted driving, hoping Powell's sentence serves as a warning to others.
Hertfordshire Constabulary is actively running the 'A Split Second' campaign to raise road safety awareness concerning the ‘fatal five’ contributing factors to serious collisions, including careless driving and mobile phone use.
The initiative collaborates with the family of Callum Dix, a young father who tragically died in a road race incident.
