Luton driver sent to prison for causing serious injury and fleeing the scene
Ahsan Mahmood will spend over two and a half years in prison.
A man from Luton has been jailed for causing life-changing injuries to a motorcyclist and fleeing the scene of the incident.
On the 15th of March 2024 in Luton, Ahsan Mahmood, 31, was driving along New Bedford Road in a Mercedes when he undertook another vehicle and collided with a motorcycle. The rider was thrown from the bike and was seriously injured.
Instead of stopping, Mahmood turned his car around and drove off. He did not report the collision until 27 hours later. He was subsequently arrested by police at his place of work on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
During an interview, Mahmood claimed the motorcyclist had caused the collision by speeding. He said he had left the scene in a panic.
Mahmood, of St Lawrence Avenue, Luton, was found guilty of causing serious injury by dangerous driving following a three-day trial in June and was sentenced on Friday (4th of September) to two years and nine months in prison.
He is also banned from driving for four and a half years and will have to take an extended test.
Detective Constable Boris Kahn from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Serious Collisions Investigation Department, who investigated, said: “Mahmood's dangerous driving had devastating consequences for the motorcyclist, who was left with serious injuries as a result of this collision."
"Rather than stopping to check and take responsibility for his actions, Mahmood chose to leave the scene and didn’t contact police until more than a day later."
