Thousands of people are expected to line the streets for Luton Carnival, which is marking its 50th anniversary by returning to Wardown Park.

The event, organised by the UK Centre For Carnival Arts, is considered to be one of the UK’s largest carnivals.

Executive Director, Claudette Whittingham said: “Carnival is about bringing communities together, it really is.

“Everywhere you look there is mass happiness, there are smiles on the faces of the young, the old. It doesn't matter who they are, people find this an experience that they're going to enjoy.”

She adds: “We want them to celebrate their various traditions from right across the world and show that here in Luton, this is a safe place for them to do that.

“We're really pleased that year on year, people are celebrating those traditions and putting them on the road.

“People also have to remember when you do that, people understand a bit more about who you are and what you represent. So, it brings communities together.”

This year marks a special return to Wardown Park, often considered the carnival's "spiritual home."

The carnival had to move to the town centre due to financial pressures but Claudette says, “it didn't particularly work very well, and people felt that being in Wardown Park is a much better place”.

“So, we're so delighted that with the support of Luton Rising, our headline sponsor, we were able to achieve that.”

Cllr Javeria Hussain, Vice Chair of Luton Rising, said: “The event not only celebrates the incredible cultural diversity that defines our town but also embodies the creativity and community spirit that Luton Rising champions through its support for local people and projects. This year’s return to Wardown Park will be a truly special moment, creating memories for families across Luton while celebrating a greener, more inclusive future.”

Cllr Hazel Simmons, Leader of Luton Council, said: “For fifty years, the Luton International Carnival has been a symbol of everything that makes Luton special, including our diversity, our energy, and our togetherness. It brings joy and pride to our town and attracts visitors from across the country.

“This golden anniversary is a chance to celebrate the incredible impact of the Carnival as the town’s showpiece event, as we celebrate 150 years of Luton Borough Status in 2026. With the Luton Council Carnival Band leading by example and our call to ‘Participate, not spectate’, we are delighted to support its return to its traditional home in Wardown Park to mark this milestone.”
