Exhibition celebrates 50 years of Luton Carnival at Central Library
Photography and artefacts highlight cultural legacy of the carnival
A new photography exhibition, Beyond Luton Carnival 50, is set to open at Luton Central Library next month, commemorating five decades of Luton Carnival and its influence on the town's cultural identity. Scheduled from 3rd October to 23rd October, the exhibition aims to celebrate the Afro-Caribbean communities that have been pivotal to the carnival's history.
The exhibition will feature the work of Hertfordshire photographer Karis Beaumont, renowned for her contributions to British Vogue and Rolling Stone, alongside personal photographs and artefacts from Luton residents. These collections document the people, places, and memories tied to the carnival and the broader Black community.
Marking Luton Carnival’s 50th anniversary, the event highlights sound systems, steel-pan players, costume makers, and various community hubs such as youth halls and sports clubs that have supported the cultural development.
Gabrielle Smith and Jade Scott, the exhibition producers, express pride in sharing the stories that have shaped local life across generations, focusing on legacy, belonging, and cultural continuity.
Karis Beaumont reflects on her experience working with the project, recounting the strong sense of community she encountered during her interactions in Luton.
Luton Councillor Jacqui Burnett, featured in the project, discusses the importance of honoring the Windrush Generation's contributions, ensuring their stories are preserved in both local and national history.
The exhibition will also host workshops, talks, and conversations with creative team members and cultural figures involved in the carnival tradition. Visitors will have opportunities to engage with the exhibition, share their experiences, and reflect on its impact.
