A man who caused over £8,000 worth of damage during a rampage at The Stanwell Hotel in Surrey has been sentenced to 16 months’ imprisonment, suspended for 16 months.

Jake Holder, 27, from Kettering, Buckingham, pleaded guilty to multiple charges including affray, burglary with intent to cause damage, criminal damage, assault of an emergency worker, and a Section 4A public order offence.

On the morning of 30th September 2023, police were called to The Stanwell Hotel on Town Lane, Stanwell at 7.53am after reports of Holder aggressively forcing his way into the property.

Entering the dining area, Holder proceeded to smash crockery, TV screens, mirrors, glass panels, and damage hotel room doors and staircases.

During the rampage, he threatened hotel staff, shouted aggressively, and frightened them with a fire extinguisher.

Surrey Police officers arrived at the scene within seven minutes and arrested Holder.

While in custody, Holder verbally abused one police officer with homophobic language and kicked another officer.

Holder was charged the following day and had been remanded in custody until he appeared at Chichester Crown Court on 16th January 2024.

He was sentenced to 16 months' imprisonment, suspended for 16 months, and given additional requirements including:

  • 120 hours of unpaid work
  • Six-month alcohol treatment programme
  • 12 days of rehabilitation appointments
  • Payment of a victim surcharge

Spelthorne Borough Commander Inspector Matt Walton commented on the case:

“Holder’s violent actions caused significant damage and distress during his rampage at The Stanwell Hotel. He inflicted thousands of pounds’ worth of damage to the property and his threatening behaviour left people at the hotel feeling intimidated and fearful.

“Although Holder’s actions occurred early in the morning and were not connected to any organised protest outside the hotel, I recognise that some people may draw comparisons with recent demonstrations in the area. The overwhelming majority of those protests have been peaceful, and it is our duty to facilitate lawful protest while balancing the rights of demonstrators with the safety of the wider community.

“However, where significant damage, disorder or disruption occurs, whether during a planned protest or as a separate incident, we will not hesitate to use our powers to address and prevent criminal behaviour."
